Earl R. Wilson, CPA

Professor-Emeritus of Accountancy
University of Missouri-Columbia

Outstanding CPA in Government Award

This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the effectiveness of government organizations and demonstrate sustained dedication to the growth and enhancement of the CPA profession.

In terms of his significant contributions to research and development in the governmental accounting sector, Earl Wilson leads by example.  Wilson’s involvement with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board spans service as an academic fellow, advisory council member, task force volunteer, and researcher on financial reporting models.

In addition to his work with GASB, Wilson has served as a member of the U.S. Comptroller General’s Advisory Council on Governmental Auditing Standards, chair of the MSCPA Governmental Accounting Committee, a member of the American Institute of CPAs Government Accounting and Auditing Committee, and president of the American Accounting Association’s (AAA) Government and Nonprofit Section.

“The effect of Earl’s efforts to steer the auditing profession at the national level is impressive, including his textbooks and work with the GAO,” said Mike Williams, partner at Hochschild, Bloom & Company, LLP.  “In order to lead at this level you must be personable and technical, as well as a real innovator.  I appreciate the help and vision Earl has brought to the Missouri Society of CPA’s Governmental Accounting Committee.”

In 2000, Wilson’s distinguished achievements as a professor and mentor to his students earned him the MSCPA Outstanding Educator Award.  Two years later, the AAA presented Wilson with the Enduring Lifetime Contribution Award for Research & Education in Government and Not-for-Profit.  Prior to earning his doctorate, Wilson served a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force in a variety of logistics and systems management capacities.
