This award honors members who have made a difference to the community through their commitment to public service. Nominees are evaluated for their contributions to and impact on the community; diversity of service activities over an extended period of time; and level of leadership, innovation and initiative.

Scott McRuer has a deep and abiding commitment to enhancing the lives of the people in his community. Over the last 30 years, he has generously given hundreds of hours to help more than 30 nonprofit, religious, and civic organizations.

Scott joined the Parkville Rotary Club in 1988, where he eventually served as sergeant at arms, president-elect and then president. As part of his involvement, Scott assisted in the formation of Parkville Rotary Charities, a charitable arm of the club providing 501(c)3 status. He initiated a club effort to assist the homeless in his community by providing “homeless kits” containing basic toiletries, socks, gloves, water, snacks and such. Thanks to his efforts, hundreds of those kits have been distributed in the Kansas City area.

Scott has been affiliated with the Park Hills School District Educational Foundation for nearly 20 years, including six years as chairman. He also was involved in an initiative to solicit donations to provide endowed scholarships to students based on the merit of their high school work. To date, more than $650,000 has been collected, making scholarships available to 17 deserving students each year.

Scott is a past chair of MOCPA’s Kansas City Chapter, a former Ward 2 Alderman of the City of Parkville, and has served as director of the Member Chapter Finance and Strategic Planning Committees for the Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross.
